PDF Software and Information

NOTE: The United States District Court does not endorse, or in any way support any specific PDF software, method or company, although we may recommend specific products we have tested if we find them to be useful.  All the court requires is that the PDF format must be used for documents submitted to the court for ECF.  How you read PDFs, create PDFs or convert other files to PDF is entirely up to you.   There are many options in many price ranges, but remember you must have BOTH a PDF reader AND a PDF writer to properly utilize ECF.

Read PDF Documents:

Acrobat  >FREE< http://www.adobe.com
Adobe Acrobat Reader is widely used and all information on viewing PDF documents in ECF references this reader. There are other readers out there, but this one is considered the standard.

The ECF HelpDesk highly recommends using the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Write PDF Documents:

PDF995  >FREE< http://www.pdf995.com
A simple converter, but easy to install and use to create PDF documents.  Pdf995 is free because it is "adware" (a web page will pop-up and show some advertising when you create a PDF), but the documents you create with it are clean and free of any advertising and will only contain the data you wish.  For a small fee you can prevent the ads from popping up.

NOTE:  The other PDF offerings from pdf995.com ("PdfEdit995" & "Signature995") are optional and not required.

CutePDF Writer  >FREE< http://www.cutepdf.com/
Another easy-to-install-and-use piece of freeware to create PDF documents.  CutePDF Writer is free and does not show advertisements.

Acrobat Writer http://www.adobe.com
The full version of Adobe's Acrobat Writer software has many useful tools and features which may help you significantly.  A worthy investment if you plan on doing a lot of PDF work, especially with scanned documents.

Adobe also offers an online PDF converter.

Corel http://www.corel.com
WordPerfect versions 9, 10 & 11 word-processing programs already have a built in PDF converter.

Apple Macintosh OSX has a built-in PDF converter.
Apple Macintosh OS9 users may want to try PrintToPDF as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat Writer.  Since we have no experience with this product, we would appreciate your feedback.

The following are just a few of the applications that we have found simply searching the web for "PDF", but there are many more.

The ECF HelpDesk does not have any information on usage:

ActivePDF http://www.activepdf.com
Server based PDF software and a number of other PDF tools.

AdLib http://www.adlibsoftware.com/
Suite of PDF tools, including server-based tools. The Sentinel product will monitor a source directory and convert all files in it to PDF automatically.

FinePrint http://www.fineprint.com
"PDF Factory" which creates PDF documents as well as other printing tools.

Global Graphics http://www.jawspdf.com
JawsPDF Create, edit, manage PDFs.
